A Worldwide Cooperation for Regional Sustainable Development

During the next decade, important research and investments will be necessary worldwide to face environmental challenges in the areas of:

  • clean water supply
  • carbon neutral developments: renewable energy production, biomass refinery (fuels and materials)
  • industrial and household waste management
  • sanitation of contaminated sites

These investments open new business opportunities which have recently become very profitable, due to the increasing prices of energy and other natural resources, the increase of the awareness of the governments, industries and populations on global environmental issues and more particular the danger of green house effects.

Network of Green Centers, a Tool for Promoting the Knowledge Economy in Local Sustainable Development

Nevertheless the challenges and even more the implementation of sustainable development must be dealt with at the local and regional level and can be met successfully only through efficient partnerships between the public sector (regional authorities) and the private sector and will create and develop small and medium sized enterprises, generating profits and jobs. The cutting-edge tool for promoting such a sustainable development is a Green Center.

Through the international network of Green Centers, a real “knowledge society” will be established focused on the sustainable local development. This knowledge society will target to increase the quality of life and develop the local economy by improving and promoting local competences and resources in public-private partnerships.

Creation of IFGRA

In order to achieve this objective and to share "best practices" in the environmental field worldwide, the International Federation of Green Regions - IFGRA has been established on June 25, 2007.

IFGRA is officially supported by Swiss authorities, the city government of Lausanne and international communities. Mr. Daniel Brélaz, Mayor of Lausanne, has taken the responsibility of Chairman of IFGRA.

IFGRA will be a project driven platform for identifying and sharing the best practices of local sustainable development in various types of communities: states, regions, economic associations, local organizations and related corporate stakeholders.

The Federation's creation ceremony has taken place on October 31st, 2007, during the SESEC VI symposium (Sustainable Environmental Solutions to Emerging Countries) at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. The happy announcement was made by Mr. Daniel Brelaz, Mayor of Lausanne, a "Green" city directly involved in the creation of the Federation (www.sesec.org).

As all SESEC symposiums have focused - bringing the regional decision makers, green technology providers and financing institutions together to work on projects - IFGRA and its promotion arm, SESEC, will continue on the same path to a new horizon.
